What are the benefits of practising Taekwon-Do?
There are many benefits to learning Taekwon-Do. The two biggest benefits are physical fitness and character development.
The study of Taekwon-Do offers several unique advantages to the physical fitness of the student. Taekwon-Do's high repetition low resistance movements develop longer, leaner and more flexible muscles. It does not produce large, knotty muscles but replaces fat tissue with lean tissue. This results in improved endurance, flexibility, strength and general well-being. The kicking movements produce toned and firm abdomen, hips and thighs.
For fitness fans, a vigorous Taekwon-Do workout burns about 600 calories per hour, one of the highest for any sports activity. Taekwon-Do also offers a means of developing muscular strength, agility, flexibility, peripheral vision, understanding of body mechanics and concentration. All these will also boost performance in other sports.
Apart from physical fitness, Taekwon-Do is also one of the best means of developing emotional, perceptual and psychological characteristics which enable a person to be more effective in society. Constant repetition teaches patience and the resolve to overcome any difficulty. Sparring teaches humility, courage, alertness, accuracy, adaptability and self-control. Pattern teaches concentration, grace, balance and coordination while the fundamental exercises develop precision, imagination and purpose. Thus, Taekwon-Do offers a strict self-imposed discipline along with the spirit of cooperation and mutual respect.
I'm not physically fit. Does that mean I cannot practise Taekwon-Do?
Taekwon-Do is suitable for everyone, regardless of fitness level. Anyone can benefit from Taekwon-Do practice. At Island Taekwon-Do Centre, we have students ranging in age from 6 to 45.
